- Topics
- Introduction: Hank Barry and Jack Hodgson
- DW and JH are old friends from Boston and CA
- JH is just back from CA... living in NH
- decompressed for a while and now compressing again
- Excited about the blog world... it's like the old PC/Mac groups
- It's a passion
- Been a while since the computing industry has had a passion
- HB was a CEO of Napster
- DW: Many people passionate about it
- At a VC firm
- Investing in software since 1989
- About 1 bil. under management, 300 mil. getting ready
- Not interested in "investment"... looking into "building companies"
- Get people doing non-economic things... because they will turn into it
- This is a great time... particularly for excited and passionate people
- HB has a few questions
- Why do people do it - I don't get it.
- Some people like to write - SF
- The technology makes it easier (see next question)
- Tell me about the technology
- If you were tasked with giving money to grow blogging, what would you think about blogging and RSS? Would you be spending time here?
- There's a lot of interesting software ideas that stem from it
- For me, the writing is interesting for a social aspect, but unclear from a economic angle
- Great way to understand whats "going on"
- Reactions to news stories, that sort of thing
- Fascinated by technology side... things like napster -- ease of community and distribution
- DW talks about investing in technology... versus business
- it will cure the curve of burn and bust
- "Get the rocket for the next time"
- Blogging helps you return the roots and go back to the basics
- Find out what we built... or didn't build
- CA used to foster technology but maybe not anymore
- "How do we rekindle this?"
- Bloggers are rekindling without permissions
- Passion!
- SF: Blogging is often Online diaries... livejournal provided this
- AG: People get more out of weblogs than just keeping a diary... information about people
- HB: People are creative... half of the families in the US have a serious musician... creative around photography and art... writing online helps this sort of thing
- HB: extended into other media... garage sale aspect of this... (microcontent/micropayment)
- HB: creating digital objects
- Channel Dean Demo
- Working with Jim Moore - berkman/dean guy
- "What would you do in 2 or 3 days to change the web presence?"
- 1. Bring RSS in - consume and producer
- Bring in multiple sources... mass media & bloggers
- The dean guys are like in the early days of the internet
- What's next?
- The people should probably play a big role in the campaign
- That's the hype on Dean... but they don't really do it. People would just like it.
- Their weblog is a house organ... can't say anything critical
- Get the web in... offer hosting to the interesting people
- The comments are effectively shut down
- Would be a great thing
- JM - But they won't do it if they won't be critical
- JH: Have "They" bought into the idea?
- What "They" are you talking about? Not a typical organization
- Dean Campaign doesn't make decision like Harvard
- Especially right now
- If the Internet is fired... then this will be shutdown too
- MF: Great timing with technology, Terrible with politics - jumping on a sinking ship
- Jay McCarthy demos makeoutcity blogging
- Andrew Grumet's demo
- Rick Heller's reading list
- Not Discussed but Mentioned
- Next Week Topics
- Blogging Center
- MS IE team
- Hosting for Presidential candidates
- Come back to Hank Barry
- MF will demo his Dreamweaver / Manilla blogging
- DW talk about inclusion in Channel Z
- Talk more about Salons
- sgarrity's radio show
- Notes
