Someone emailed me asking why I hadn't posted recently. Although it is the case that I've been pretty busy now that I've got to Brown, the real thing is lack of enthusiasm for content. I've been reading about the same amount, but don't feel like linking to movie reviews, yet-another libertarian piece, etc. If I see something good, I certainly will.#

So, to provide some content and not just three links every week, I decided to write more myself and include links at the bottom. This will be the first time my 'blog' is actually like a 'blog.'

Hopefully it will go well.

Latin Pop Singers#

I've recently been listening to Latin pop singers almost exclusively: Shakira, Thalía, Selena, etc. They are good at what they do, but most importantly I love to sing along. While thinking about this the other day I realized the reason I like to sing to Español so much is that I can practice my 'R's.

X11 on OS 10.4.1#

The built-in X11 server seem very flakey since the upgrade. For example, the focused window does not come to the foreground when you focus the application; my xterms always crash or get hung trying to quit; etc.

Meeting People and Clubs#

Since I've moved to Providence, and in particular broke up with my most recent girlfriend, I have the problem of meeting people. Of course, the people in my group at Brown are nice, but you can't be too imposing, and the campus as a whole is rather dead for the summer.

So, the common options are going to clubs/bars, activities, or being nosey in public. The problem is that I can't bear to live such a lie, nor do I think I'd want to. There is a reason I don't regular bars and clubs, because I dislike it and probably would dislike people there. Similarly for most types of activities I might try, I don't quilt or bead and my honesty would compel to explain that I came to the beading party to meet girls. And finally, being nosey in public is rather odd, but I recognize it can be reasonable. The unfortunate thing about that though is that you must be out, and I don't have the resources to find a reason to goto a restaurant or store so often.

This is not the most serious problem I have, but its something I've thought about recently.

Why did they name it Monad? Bizarre.#

Aaron Swartz has a point. Although, I think we have different standards of how serious this issue is.#
