where you go, make sure no one knows

from deadly.org are some quotes from theo.c of the openbsd project. a sample: ''If you can't figure out yourself, you're lacking some mental faculties'' - hah.#

brad delong reflects on the Argentinean collapse after reading a washington post article about how wall street and american investors were a large cause of the problems. i live under a rock so i have nothing to add, but anything bad is terribly sad.#

cedric points out that you shouldn't take sensational articles that making sweeping generalizations to get eye balls very seriously. silly java programmers have to worry about so much stuff...#

dave reveals the plot of the _Joey_ spinoff from _Friends_ - its very hilarious and sounds like he was in on the contract signing: ''So, what happens to Joey? He stays in New York because it'd be unpatriotic to move him, although re-setting the series in Hollywood would make thematic sense. Joey becomes not quite as dumb. He is either an actor in a minor, failing troupe that comes up with wacky ideas for shows (e.g., at Christmas they get hired to enact a punk Santa's workshop in Macy's store Window) or Joey's a struggling actor who supports himself as an office boy in an uptight company from whom he has to hide that he is an actor. Either way we get a band of entertaining characters around him'' - hah#

phil questions the traditional wisdom that ''nobody reads blogs on sundays'' and explains that this phenomena is because no one writes on the weekend, but when there is something to read you have more free time to read it thoroughly. i know what he means, i think i read much more on weekends.#

so in love i wish i were#

i think that i would hate my life if i got this error message from a program - ''Data potato doo-wop doo-wop'' - read for details.#

julius caesar on the problems in the republic - ''It's clear to all that there are grave problems facing the Republic. What are they, exactly? In a nutshell, we have lost the ability to compromise. One of the great strengths of our system is the vast number of checks and balances in place to prevent the abuse of power. Tribunes of the people can veto bills that the Senate puts forward that are not in the people's interest, and the Senate must ratify bills put forward by the people. But this is also one of our weaknesses. When the two sides, which many refer to as the optimates and the populares, are unwilling to compromise, they can prevent anything from getting done. It's now standard fare for elections to be delayed, often until halfway through the next year. Important bills, which in reality should be dealt with immediately, are put off indefinitely, and the Republic suffers for it. [...] Compromise is not weakness, it is the essence of strength.''#

from ten reasons why is discussion of a metafilter post about the difference between stealing and copyright infringement: ''physical property is "rivalrous." It is a limited resource and can't be owned or consumed concurrently. If I steal the Mona Lisa, you can't go to the museum and see it. If you take my blender, I can no longer use it. Intellectual property is a "non-rivalrous" resource. My consumption of it doesn't impact yours. If I take a photo of the Mona Lisa, the original is still hanging on the wall of the museum. You can take my idea, but I haven't lost it by you taking it.'' - that's well and good, but right now they are both illegal and civil disobedience is SO 60s. get behind larry and make it happen.#

a comparison of "food models" and "porn stars" - ''if food was porn, this room and the cheeseburgers it houses is hot, glamorous industry that writes Jenna Jameson her paycheck, and the thing I get wrapped up in greasy paper at McDonald's or wherever I happen to be eating, is like a grainy, ten second clip of mature amateur action. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that burger is more mature than I'd like to imagine.'' - hah.#

tony pierce - ''i dont have the guts to make lotsa money. but i do have the guts to wake up a snoring cheerleader before the alarm sounds. infact im mighty courageous in the waterbed, and if theres one thing i can teach the world it's whisper, be safe, and experiement.''#

how to set yourself on fire

simon willison links the Doomsday Algorithm a way of calculating the day of the week, in your head, for any given date. it's very neat. it looks like it would be easy to do once you memorized a few constants.#

don park writes on zeroconf at his blog, brought about the new opensource implementation of it for windows/linux. his vision of a zeroconf/wifi future is very appealing. he's very right too, zeroconf makes the most sense with a wireless network because you have inherently not really set up or prepared anything before using it.#

dave winer writes something interesting about "being important" in the blogosphere: ''Bloggers who never flame anyone and don't have blogrolls (or don't make a big deal about them) may take a long time to become "important" -- but if they stand out because of the quality of their ideas, and the ideas they insipire, they can attain a kind of longevity that has value, like the giants whose shoulders Sir Isaac Newton stood on.'' - i like it for two reasons, it just makes sense, and he touches on the sad truth that if you flame a lot then it's easy to get eyeballs on you because people will get religious about supporting your target or will want to band with you against a common enemy. dave winer also has mind orgasms#

natty reports on the controversy surrounding computerized voting machines that are not recountable and whose correctness is beyond question. more security through obscurity pushes the boundaries of my flaming maturity.#

derek deals with bad service at a hotel. i like the way he tells it, first there's some bad, and then there's some good, and then the climax of the story is whirlwind drop into the hell of weird hotel practices.#

from peerfear, is a mozilla person admitting their greatest shortcoming: ''I think that our biggest shortcoming has been in marketing our technologies and our products. We've always put development first and marketing and distributing to users second. We've got a great product and a more people should hear about it.'' - it's nice that the idea of marketing mozilla is being picked up from all over.#

from the eros blog is an interesting essay/rant on censorship from a porn directory (i think.) the great language and thoughts really wrecks havoc on preconceived notions of what people involved in pornography are like.#

and a great joke from the same bacchus.#

shelley powers, in a fit of tired frustration, links an interesting photoblog that tries to capture words in pictures. she also tries to figure out how to fight the "learned helplessness" that is pushed on the american public by the bush administration: ''How do you fight learned helplessness? I've talked about this here also; you fight learned helplessness with anger. Not everyone will agree with me, but if you can anger the American voters enough, I have a feeling they'll start seeing the reality, the truth behind today's patriotism. I hope. I wish.'' - i suppose her feeling is that while anger doesn't solve anything, it's a good stimuli for getting people to open their eyes are pursue right action.#

sam ruby links phil's entry, There is no they that compares the world of blogs to a small town, rather than a big city. you don't say "they", you say "we" - because the future of the blog city is the responsibility of the citizens and if you're not helping, you're hurting. i can't help but think of the AOL journals thing and the Dead Milkman song, "This is a tiny town, and don't want your kind around"#

anil dash is curiosofied about the popularity of "Google Hacks" - ''I'm thinking part of the reason the book is doing so well is because of the current resurgence in popularity of the Lord of the Rings books. I mean, don't the names "Tara Calishain" and "Rael Dornfest" sound like hobbits or something?'' - hah#

charles miller has a great idea - ''Major shopping centres need to offer a Rent-A-Girlfriend service. They meet you at the door, act enthusiastic, drag you around the shops for the afternoon (frequently dragging you into womens' clothes shops and making you hang around while they "oooh" over tops, just to add that air of authenticity). Nothing sordid would be involved, they would just have to convince me that they cared enough to be giving me honest advice.'' - so funny! i think i've bought close... maybe three times in the last 2 years, not because i hate it though, but because i like making things last.#

scoble links what you are expected to answer when you are making a pitch in silicon valley. the advice is good even if you're not trying to sell something to VCs, if you are just wondering if you have a chance. they are pretty broad, defining questions.#

very cool mummy from don park. that's enlightenment#

tony pierce should be a campaign advisor. ''everyone who runs for governor in this recall is saying, "i know its lame, so what, im an unamerican selfish opportunist who really has no respect for elections. but please vote for me in this election." when they should instead be focusing on the palm trees.''#

ted leung clarifies the terms and domain of the swampwolf howl project. he makes the funny comment, ''There *is* open source on Windows, too.'' in reference to marc canter asking for it on windows. although marc wasn't referring to this specifically, i think it would very nice if there was zeroconf built into some Microsoft apps rather than just being available for 3rd parties.#

tom coates thinks the real evil anywhere in the gay-marriage debate is from the Vatican. ''Frankly, it is the evil in the Vatican's document - the fact that it will have a massively negative effect in some people's lives and no positive effect on anyone else's - that I don't approve of. '' - i am in the same state of disbelief as him.#

dan hon links apple codenames for the mac addict in you#

charles miller describes the best thing since sliced bread: the "Placebo Mini-Pattern" - ''Some long-running processing is occurring in your program. You really have no idea how long this event is going to take, but you want to keep the user as happy as possible while it is running.'' - you can almost feel the fumes#

downtime... ugh

so there was some gross downtime this morning, from 6am EST to 10am
